Water colour on paper

Watercolour on paper. Framed under glass with mat in elegantly carved gilt wooden moulding.

This painting features a low horizon with the wooden, side wheel steamship Chief Justice Robinson offloading passengers in Toronto harbour. The ground is iced over and there are different types of people skating; being drawn by horse led sleds; and playing with a dog. The Chief Justice Robinson operated between Toronto and Niagara until 1860. She was also featured on a 14 cent stamp in 1978.

Signed and dated 08 at the lower left corner, inscribed "Capn Murdoch Xmas 1852".
