Description

Three swallow deadeye strapped in iron shackle. Information tag reads: "Removed from Roald Amundsen's Maud at Cambridge Bay, Victoria Island, N.W.T., during spring/summer of 1949." Maud was beached in Sam Carter's Cove opposite the HBC post but on the same shore as the RCMP post. At the time this artifact was retrieved all woodwork had been stripped from the hull to a depth of 2-3 feet below the water. The remaining wood that could be reached seemed in good condition. The iron pin that held the block to the fitting on the hull was in excellent condition and the retaining nut was removed with bare hands.
