DescriptionA barometer from the chief engineer's quarters on Empress of Japan (I). It has an oak base carved in a coiled rope effect around the top face. There is a brass barometer ring screwed into a box with a raised glass cover. The barometer has a white face with red capital letters. Below the centre is the maker's name: "WHYTE & CO./ GLASGOW". At the bottom of the face there is a curved thermometer with two phrases in red print: "THE RISE, THE FALL". There is a natural wood finish on the base.
