Smoothing Plane, Leveling Plane
CategoryTools and Equipment for Communication, Woodworking T&E
Date Madecirca 1900
History of UseBefore sandpaper became common, woodworkers used smoothing planes as a final finishing tool. Held with both hands, the blade can be adjusted to a tight opening which reduces tear-out of the grain and allows only very fine strips of wood to be shaved. This plane would have been used for the cabinetry and finishing work found in the galley and cabins of St. Roch.
